Gettysburg Paved Over?

March 2nd, 2006 by Laura Moncur in News

This article from CNN talks about the worries that Gettysburg may get lost in the shuffle if gambling is allowed near it.

“Hallowed ground, where more than 600,000 Americans gave their lives, is being paved over in favor of shopping malls, housing tracts and even gambling casinos,” the trust’s president, James Lighthizer, said Tuesday during a news conference.

After the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Abraham Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address. It is only 220 words long, but they were powerful words indeed.

It might do James Lighthizer and his trust better to work toward Lincoln’s goal of finishing the work that the soldiers lost their lives for. Even today, racism stalks our streets. There were even incidents of black voters being denied access to voting in the last election. The soldiers that died at Gettysburg were fighting to keep our country whole and untainted by such embarrassments. That is what we should fight for, far more than a slice of land.

Civil Rights Photos Finally Published

March 1st, 2006 by Laura Moncur in News

Hidden in the equipment closet of the Birmingham News was a box of photos marked, “Keep. Do Not Sell.” They were photographs of the civil rights movement in Birmingham, Alabama during the 1950′s and 1960′s. The newspaper was unwilling to print the photos back then, but the full photo gallery has been printed now.

If it is true that what we cannot see does not exist, then Alabama would have been able to brush these incidents under the carpet and we would have never been able to conquer the blatant racism in our country. Racism still exists today and it must be fought wherever it is found, but it’s good to see how far we’ve come in the last fifty years.

Fat Tuesday

February 28th, 2006 by Laura Moncur in News

New Orleans has put on a good show for Mardi Gras after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. Today is Fat Tuesday, the last day of Mardi Gras. Tomorrow is Lent and begins a season of conscious self-denial.

It seems that so many people celebrate Fat Tuesday without enjoying the season of Lent in its wake. If you have heard about all the festivities of Mardi Gras, but don’t know about Lent, visit this website to find out more:

Lotto Winners Are All Smiles

February 23rd, 2006 by Laura Moncur in News

Quang Dao revels in his new status - multimillionaire.Eight employees at the meat processing plant went in on a powerball lotto pool and won the huge $365,000,000 jackpot. That works out to about $22,500,000 apiece before taxes. Suddenly they are millionaires.

When asked if he still is going to work at the meat processing plant, Eric Zornes replied,

“I’ve been retired for about four days now.”

It makes me so happy to see them win this huge amount of money. I wonder how their lives will change because of it. Hopefully for the better.

Evolution Goes Back To The Drawing Board

February 21st, 2006 by Laura Moncur in News

The way the title of this article was written, it made it sound like the school board had eliminated the teaching of evolution altogether. I started to get hot under the collar before I even had a chance to read the article.

It turns out that the Ohio Board of Education voted to remove the lesson plan that was submitted, which suggested that students look for evidence to prove or disprove evolution. That kind of talk is a gateway drug to intelligent design, which is Creationism’s foot in the door of our Biology classes.

Stay in the Theology wing where you belong.
