It’s rare when I get more than one or two quotes from a book, but I got twenty-three great quotes from Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk. From the author of Fight Club, Invisible Monsters is a convoluted story about a beautiful fashion model who is grossly mutilated in an accident. With half her face missing, she meets a drag queen one operation away from gender reassignment at her speech therapist. While our heroine is learning how to say consonants without her lower jaw, Brandy teaches her how to get past the past and look to her future.
Sounds like a great story, doesn’t it?
Don’t expect anything cheesy and heart warming from the author of Fight Club. It’s hard to feel sorry for a spoiled super-model dealing with the remains of her perfect face, but somehow Chuck makes us like her and hate her at the same time. Her best friend who ran off with her boyfriend are another pair that you want to hate, but end up understanding. And Brandy? Well, you just have to meet Brandy to understand her.
Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book:

Last month, I stumbled upon Animal Crossing: Wild World for the Nintendo DS. It is a videogame and I did a good job of describing it here:
Mike and I have been in disagreement for the last month about whether to add quotations from the game into our collection. I wanted to add them, but he didn’t think quotes from a videogame would be understandable on their own. He thought they would be inside jokes that didn’t stand up on their own merit. After weeks of discussion, we finally decided to add the quotes. Here are some of my favorites:
In the end, I decided that I would enter these quotes into our collection because so many people play this game. There is a generation of children who are going to get their morals and their views of life from this game and I couldn’t be any happier about it. Just like Sesame Street taught me to read and instilled me with a sense of wonder and joy at learning, Animal Crossing will teach kids to handle money, hold down a job and cultivate friendships. I couldn’t ask for any better introduction to those subjects than Animal Crossing.
I have been delighted on a daily basis by the personalities of the characters and the wittiness of the dialogue and letters that are written. There is a lot of repetition in this game, but that doesn’t make it any less witty. A special thanks to Takayuki Ikkaku, Arisa Hosaka, and Toshihiro Kawabata for the excellent script!

I saw this quotation today in an email and I thought to myself, “I should add that to our collection.” When I checked, however, it was already there. Mike has added a bunch of funny Terry Pratchett quotations and I had an enjoyable few minutes reading them this morning. Here are a couple of my favorites:
I tried reading Good Omens when all my friends were raving about it, but I really didn’t ever finish it. After reading all of these funny quotes, it looks like I need to give it another try…

When we are faced with death, we are looking for solace. The end of this existence is a scary thing to face and we would like to know answers. That is why celebrations like The Day of the Dead and Halloween exist. We are uncertain about what happens after we die and we want to know what is to come.
Mitch Albom’s book The Five People You Meet in Heaven is a book that has provided solace to many people over the years. Our readers have submitted quotations from this book many times over and we have included them in our collection.
Even if you have no belief in the afterlife, some of these quotations will help you during the time of loss. If you do believe in a traditional heaven, then this book will be inspirational and comforting. Here are a few quotes from the book:

I read Perfect Circle about a year ago. His Texas-based story about a man who could see ghosts was the perfect Halloween book. This year, Sean Stewart has teamed up with Jordan Weisman to create Cathy’s Book: If Found Call 650-266-8233. It’s a book. It’s a game. It’s a mystery that you have to solve yourself using clues from the book, calls to certain telephone numbers and websites you need to access.
Cathy is stinging from a breakup with her boyfriend, Victor. Instead of leaving it be, she tries to find out why he left her and has entered a world that would be better left alone. The death of Victor’s coworker leads her to a mystery that only you can solve.
Instead of just reading a book this month, try solving one. Cathy’s Book will be on the shelves September 12th. Until then, just sit tight and read a normal book.
