Never Fit For Real Work

January 24th, 2007 by Laura Moncur in Quotations

Sometimes I feel like this. I feel like I will never be fit for real work. I tried. I really don’t know what my problem is. I guess the kind of company that is worth my devotion is rare. I work hard and I relax hard. Sometimes I work so hard that I can’t do any work for weeks on end. A 9 to 5 job just doesn’t let me work in spurts like that. They need me to come in every day.

Working for myself is harder than working for someone else, but I’ve finally found that company that is worth my devotion: my own.

I don’t think that yours is a strange sentiment. I have worked a variety of jobs ranging from factories to higher education and still know what it is to feel a void in my daily work routine. Sometimes I can get so caught up into what I am doing, that time is not an issue. Whereas other times, my work objectives lack the meaning that sustain my motivations to contribute.

I admire your move to go out and work for yourself. It speaks to courage to define your own fulfillment.

If “Real Work” means that all our actions are directed by ventures that do not reflect the direction that our spirit is taking us, then you and I both might want to do what Baker did… become writers. (smile)

Ditto. We must be gifted with the artistic spirit. We therefore lose the motivation to work where a monotonous routine is required.

As much as I have dedicated 20 years of my life to my career, I do not feel I have reaped the fruits of my labour.

Teaching or Writing is what I would prefer to do. As I do not value money over people, I am not able to run a company.

I think the point that Baker was trying to make, is that writing didn’t require any real work because he enjoyed writing so much. If we enjoy what we are doing, we aren’t likely to call it work, but rather… fun!
