Gettysburg Paved Over?
March 2nd, 2006 by Laura Moncur in NewsThis article from CNN talks about the worries that Gettysburg may get lost in the shuffle if gambling is allowed near it.
“Hallowed ground, where more than 600,000 Americans gave their lives, is being paved over in favor of shopping malls, housing tracts and even gambling casinos,” the trust’s president, James Lighthizer, said Tuesday during a news conference.
After the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Abraham Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address. It is only 220 words long, but they were powerful words indeed.
It might do James Lighthizer and his trust better to work toward Lincoln’s goal of finishing the work that the soldiers lost their lives for. Even today, racism stalks our streets. There were even incidents of black voters being denied access to voting in the last election. The soldiers that died at Gettysburg were fighting to keep our country whole and untainted by such embarrassments. That is what we should fight for, far more than a slice of land.
