New Orleans has put on a good show for Mardi Gras after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. Today is Fat Tuesday, the last day of Mardi Gras. Tomorrow is Lent and begins a season of conscious self-denial.

By these things examine thyself. By whose rules am I acting; in whose name; in whose strength; in whose glory? What faith, humility, self-denial, and love of God and to man have there been in all my actions?
