Chuck Palahniuk: Invisible Monsters
December 5th, 2006 by Laura Moncur in LiteratureIt’s rare when I get more than one or two quotes from a book, but I got twenty-three great quotes from Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk. From the author of Fight Club, Invisible Monsters is a convoluted story about a beautiful fashion model who is grossly mutilated in an accident. With half her face missing, she meets a drag queen one operation away from gender reassignment at her speech therapist. While our heroine is learning how to say consonants without her lower jaw, Brandy teaches her how to get past the past and look to her future.
Sounds like a great story, doesn’t it?
Don’t expect anything cheesy and heart warming from the author of Fight Club. It’s hard to feel sorry for a spoiled super-model dealing with the remains of her perfect face, but somehow Chuck makes us like her and hate her at the same time. Her best friend who ran off with her boyfriend are another pair that you want to hate, but end up understanding. And Brandy? Well, you just have to meet Brandy to understand her.
Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book:
