The famous line ending the commercial PSA between action and adventure during the Superfriends. Ah, how simple it all seemed.
A young boy steps innocently steps off the sidewalk into the path of a speeding car. Suddenly, Superman appears, swoops up the surprised boy and returns him safely onto the sidewalk of his suburban neighborhood. "You know, you need to look both ways before you cross the street, you could've been hit by a car," Superman instructs. "Gosh, I didn't know," says the innocent young boy. "Well, now you know, and KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE," says Superman as he smiles and flies back up into the sky.

The original quotation, according to Bartlett's, is "The first blow is half the battle."--Oliver Goldsmith, She Stoops to Conquer

In many places on the Internet, you'll see "A good beginning is half the battle," usually described as an old saying.

If Goldsmith did actually coin the phrase, then everybody else has been borrowing it for centuries, in expressions that take the form "....is half the battle." If you don't want to mix your metaphors, the blank should be filled in with something like, "a good defense" or "keeping your weapons sharp" or "striking first" or something else appropriate to a battle. "Knowing" doesn't exactly fill the bill.
